IQ Bot Update

The iq bot has been updated to support international location selection for weather reports.  For example, you can use the command .wz tokyo to retrieve the current weather report for Tokyo, Japan.  If a location exists in more than one country (for example, London is in both the United Kingdom and Canada), iq will tell you where the locations are, and give you the correct commands to use (in this case .wz london, gb for UK, and .wz london, ca for Canada).  There are a couple of lesser known countries that I wasn’t able to source the weather.com codes for, but weather reports for them shouldn’t be required too often

The computer that iq runs on is currently undergoing a reinstall / upgrade, so the bot itself is currently on a virtual machine on my computer at home, and may be a little unstable as a result.

After the hardware upgrade / reinstall, I will be focusing on some different functionality.  This will include:

  • URL Catcher - iq will catch any urls that are entered into the channel, and add them to a database (with the nicknames of the users who added them), so that the data may be used on the website.
  • Accessible statistics recording - I will build and trial a module to monitor the channel and record user statistics (word counts and whatever else springs to mind), with the intention of building a live statistics monitor with more flexibility than what is currently given with the cairnscentral bot.
  • Quote management system - iq will record particular quotes via a trigger, and submit them to a quote submissions database.  There will also be a web based management system to approve the quotes.  Once quotes are approved, they will be published on the website.

If anyone else has any suggestions for other functionality for the bot, please let me know (as usual, via comments to this post, or via #cairnscentral).
